Totally agree. The airline industry survived bankruptcy by reorganizing under Chapter 11. The auto makers just don't want to change how they do business. The UAW doesn't want to give up any benefits. Bankruptcy would allow the Big 3 to jettison not only losing divisions and models of cars, but also those incredibly expensive labor contracts.

Think about it: If our country subsidized our automakers the way the Japanese and others do by providing health care, American auto companies would be every bit as competitive. If you think the job market is bad now, let OUR automakers fail, and see what happens to the economy. Unions have created the standard of living in the US. When blue collar workers' conditions improved, the white collar workers' conditions improved right along with them. That's not to say there isn't some fat that can be trimmed, but let's not cut off our nose to spite our face.
